Galen Davison first experimented with his own
talent a year after exploring the art galleries of Europe with his grandmother
at the impressionable age of eighteen. Winning a scholarship to the
University of Victoria, BC, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree,
(with honours). Perhaps a gentle rebel at heart, the young artist accepted
his assignments, but put a twist on them, in order to satisfy his own
need for expression. "I remember being told to do a painting,"
he admits, almost shyly, "and asking the instructor if I could
do something sculptural, instead - I treated the sculpture (composed
of glass vessels filled with antifreeze) as if it were a painting."
Not merely successful, the piece earned an honourable mention for the
much coveted Helen Pitt Visual Arts Canada Award for the most promising
artist to graduate from a British Columbia university.
Davison’s ability to synthesize the 'rules' of painting, combined
with his tactile sense and fascination with the idea of ordered space,
moved the artist beyond the regular plane of "Contemporary Art".
His is a uniquely symbolic world, where texture, unique material, and
color unite to make an image that is visually captivating and mentally
challenging. He applies plaster, hand cut metal, bee's wax and oil paint,
allowing the luminous texture to dictate the shape and form of the finished
piece.
His latest series “Petal Paintings” are partitioned and
linear. This mixed media painting exploration focuses on floral/landscape
abstraction. "These paintings are bold, and seem to emit their
own light. There is history in the textured weathered layers. The viewer
is truly taken on an exploration."
A familiar theme – Flower Motifs- runs through this recent work.
"The segments create the space," he says, "and prescribe
landscaped organization. The translucent colors, on the other hand,
project energy and rhythm."
His work can be found in many personal collections across North America
and corporate collections such as Westin Hotels and Sayward Hill. A
small selection of his work is exhibited worldwide through Paris based,
Spiral Licensing. Although he paints in all sizes, Galen focuses on
the larger works which demand a large feature wall or lobby space.
Happily married, with three young boys, living near the ocean in Victoria,
Canada he paints at the window of his hillside studio. Galen Davison
continues his journey of exploration, forging his reputation as one
of Vancouver Island’s leading artists.
